Rwanda is a country in Central Africa bordered by Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, and the Congo.
Rwanda is considered the land of a thousand hills and also boasts lush flora and fauna and dramatic natural wonders on its verdant savannah. The country is home to rare species of animals. The silverback mountain Gorillas live here along with many types of birds and insects.
Rwanda has three national parks: Akagera, Volcanoes National Park, and Nyungwe National Park. There are also many other sites to see such as the National Museum in Butare. The Genocide Memorial in Kigali is a stunning monument to the horrific events of the nation’s past. Safaris are also popular and guides are readily available.
The local delicacy is "Brochettes" (goat kebabs). They are scrumptious and are available in most cafes. Many cafes also serve grilled fish and chicken, frites and frites-banane (fried plantain).
Local buffets are known as "Melange". Included are potatoes, bananas, beans, rice, cassava, vegetables and a small amount of meat. Kigali has the best assortment of restaurants.
Beer is brewed in Bralirwa. Local and imported beer is available throughout the country. Large beers are favored so you will receive quite a bit when you order. A local banana beer is also available called Urgwagwa.
Rwanda is a very modest country. You will want to dress modestly and avoid public displays of affection. It is also considered rude to stare an elder in the eye. Women are not usually seen smoking in public. While it is not required of tourists to follow these customs it is polite to do so while visiting the country.
The main airport is located in Kigali. There are direct flights from Brussels two times a week. Daily flights arrive from Uganda’s Entebbe airport, Johannesburg, and Addis Ababa. It is important to book flights ahead of time in order to be assured of flights. You may also fly into Goma, three hours from Kigali. No matter where in Rwanda you vacation you will have a memorable holiday.
